OUR TRIP TO THE HISTORICAL CENTRE

We went to the Historical Centre with the whole class to do some activities. When we finally got to the Historical Centre a lady told us that we were going to be creating our own mini beast, we went on an app called BookCreator. We firstly created a cover for our book about our mini beasts. After changing the colour of the background and adding a title we drew a picture of what we wanted out mini beast to look like (using the iPad’s). We had to label the body parts on our mini beasts to show what everything was. Afterwards we created our mini beasts with K'nex but we only had four bendy K'nex for wings, body, head or anything else. When we had finished creating our mini beasts we videoed us explaining about our mini beasts and what they eat and do. We then broke our mini beasts apart and put everything away and then gathered on the carpet and talked about our mini beasts then went back to school.

Our Day Out To The Botanical Gardens

On Tuesday the 24^th of February years 5/6 took an adventurous visit to the Botanical gardens of Wales. There were beautiful flowers and plants from all over the world, such as coffee beans , fair trade bananas and pineapples all from Columbia. We strolled around looking at some of the spell-bound attractions. After a wonderful morning of exploring we were taken to a little hut above a lake, and a teacher (called Claire) talked to us about fair trade. The fair trade sign is a man waving his hand. Fair trade is a foundation set up in 1992 for farmers to get a fair price for their goods. Fair trade also helps people work them self out of poverty. Fair trade also helps people that work for other people in factory’s and plantations. Without Fair trade families would find it hard to work themselves out of poverty, to send their children to school to educate them for a better chance of survival. We also learnt that the farmers would probably only get a few pence a day (not even enough to live.) Claire took us to the rain forest (green house) and showed us lots of different plants and fruits such as pineapples and a banana tree. As we strolled through, Miss Woods glasses steamed up as if we were in the Amazon. Then it was time to go so we met up with Mr Hall and then unfortunately the bus came and we had to go back home to Maesycoed.

Wales VS Tonga

Our school went on a trip to the Wales VS Tonga match in the Millennium stadium however before that we stopped on the way in McDonalds where we went for a delicious meal. When we got to the stadium we found our seats and got prepared to watch the match. Then the Tongans came on to do the hilarious Haka then the game began. Before you could say they are going to lose they had won plus everyone in the stadium did the Mexican wave and so did we because Wales had won. Unfortunately we had to leave so we walked back to catch the bus and we had a shock, it was not there! So we had to wait for 1 whole hour until it came and on the way back we sang Christmas songs it was really fun.

Art Week

For art week the children of Mr. Coles class yr 5/6 made volcanoes as a link to their topic 'Lost' where they had been learning about St. Lucia. They started by making a base with cardboard and a plastic bottle, and then started covering it with papier mache. The children repeated this for a few days and then finally began to paint. After everyone finished, the volcanoes looked radiant and it’s safe to say the whole class thoroughly enjoyed creating them.

Penalty Shoot Out

On Thursday the 11th July, 37 children from Years 5, 5/6 and 6 took part in the Maes-y-Coed  Penalty Shootout.  We all walked up to the Maritime Astroturf.  We were split up into two groups of 18 and 19.  The first group were split into four groups. The 19 children went over to the other side of the Astroturf to take penalties against a guest goal keeper AKA Mr Hall.  The children needed to get at least 3 to get to the next round.  Lots of money was raised for our school and our local football club.  Many thanks to Barclays Bank.

Llangrannog 2013!

Llangrannog report 2013

Llangrannog was a great experience and we particularly enjoyed the mud run and tobogganing although other activities such as the disco were not as enjoyable. The bedrooms were comfortable - ours had a toilet, large sink, small sink, shower 3 bunk beds and one single bed all complete with pillows and mattress cover. The walk down to the beach was nice and the views were phenomenal, we particularly liked the sunset and the ice-creams. Two café’s sell ice-cream, the beach hut was the best with a small queue. Although a few activities are messy they are all safe and best of all great FUN! We really enjoyed all the activities and would have regretted it if we had not gone.

The food was good and the dinner ladies friendly they made their best effort to accommodate fussy eaters or allergy sufferers. There is a huge dinner hall so no need to worry about finding a seat however as other schools are there we recommend that you get to the queue 5-10 minutes early, allergy sufferers are entitled to jump the queue and bring a friend as long as they have an allergy pass.

There is a small park for use in-between activities and there is also a field, sports hall and Astroturf. There is normally a bell for mealtime and activities although don’t rely on them as sometimes they are not set off.

Water and squash are free and supplied at all times in the main hall but there is a vending machine although they have been known to take money and not provide a product or change, furthermore there are slush puppies available at mealtimes at £1.00 each.

The horse riding was very good and the horses were kind and obedient all, the staff were patient and understanding of fears although we strongly recommend doing all of the activities. As long as you listen to the horse riding instructors and all other staff the weekend will be much safer and better for you. The high rope course was scary but fun and the climbing wall also is great fun as long as you listen. The skiing was very funny and the skis and ski boots were easy to get on although we recommend getting a shoe size bigger as the boots rub badly.

Overall we enjoyed our experience and would recommend Llangranog to others.

Girls Football

Girls from year 5 and 6 classes participated in the New Directions South Wales 6 a side football tournament at the Cardiff City House of Sport.

They were in a group with Lytchard, Cwmlai, Newton, St Josephs Catholic and Tonypandy and were unbeaten in all games. They won 5 games and drew 1 qualifying for the finals day on May 1^st.

Quarter final – drew 1-1 with St Davids then lost on penalties!!!!

Pontybrenin went on to win the cup after beating us in the group game and that was the only game Maesycoed lost over the two stages!!!!
